A recent documentary is available on Facebook: Babies Are Still Murdered Here. It is a compelling treatise on the downside of legislative incrementalism in defeating abortion. In essence, the movie makes the point that all the laws that are designed to incrementally limit abortion depend upon the honesty of abortionists. It is like putting limits on the fox in the henhouse with the assumption he will not behave like a fox in following the rules.
For example, the law that the women must be shown an ultrasound of their baby if they ask can be easily manipulated to the abortion industry’s favor. Shifting the angle of where the transducer picks up the baby’s image on an ultrasound can dramatically affect what image the mother is shown. The ultrasound provider can easily have the image show just a small portion of the baby so that it is unrecognizable as a baby. They fulfill the legal requirement while promoting the lie that the baby is an inanimate clump of cells. They can also shift the angle such that measurements of the baby will change the apparent developmental age so the baby fits in the cut-off criteria for each state for a legal abortion to be performed. The laws that limit abortions are only effective if we are trusting murderers not to lie.
Another interesting point the documentary makes is that many prolife proponents believe abortion will be outlawed if only we can get a solid majority of prolife justices on the Supreme Court. However, the documentary asserts a surprising (to me anyway) point. Roe V Wade, the landmark case that made abortion legal in America, was decided by a majority of conservative justices.
This is a spiritual battle. Satan has all his minions at work promoting the lies and deceptions of abortion. Abortion destroys the most fundamental human bond, that of a mother and child. When the very fabric of social bonds break down, the family is destroyed, and Satan rejoices. The family structure instituted by God with the first man and woman is under vigorous attack in a culture that embraces abortion.
After watching the documentary, my own heart is certainly being swayed to believe incrementalism may be a fundamentally flawed policy. Even more importantly, the only way to truly defeat abortion is through the power of the Gospel. We cannot fight this immense spiritual stronghold politically or even rationally. It must be fought with spiritual weapons.
The ministry I work with, Cities4Life, has a two-fold approach to reaching abortion-minded women which I deeply appreciate. Based on the parable of the Good Samaritan, the philosophy of our ministry is that we are called to offer tangible help and hope to the women and unborn babies. The motivation of offering resources is that Jesus Himself commands us to do so. In offering help to the most vulnerable among us, we serve Him.
But even more importantly, if there is to be true change in the hearts and minds of the abortion-determined women as well as in our society and world, the truth of God must be promoted. The crux of the whole abortion debate rests on one issue: is human life at all stages of development of sacred value, and if so, what gives it value?
As believers, we know the only answer to this question is YES, and it is the intrinsic value afforded by God when He created humanity in His image. God is the author of life, and His commands to us are clear: today I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life or death, blessings or curses. Therefore choose life that you and your offspring may live. Deuteronomy 30:19
We offer tangible help to encourage the women to pause in their murderous intent. We offer the Gospel to encourage the women to embrace the critical truths of their child’s sacred value and the need to trust and obey God in all things. Until a world in rebellion to God is convinced to repent and return to Him, there can be no lasting change in the horror of legalized child murder.
